Farm Animal Services

What can we do for farm animals?

The farm team at Kingston are a forward thinking group that look at the future of veterinary medicine in the farming industry whilst also staying true and humble to our Dorset roots.

Our team actively invests their time in building relationships with you and to better understand your animals and business needs. Our vets regularly attend courses to further their knowledge basis and develop their practical skill set, these courses help us ensure that our vets are keeping up to date with the newest standards.

Routine and Non-Routine Fertility Visits

Our farm vets can do routine and non-routine fertility visits. Non-routine fertility visits can be booked in, however the more notice given to the office for such work will allow us to better meet your needs.

Routine fertility visits can be discussed with your vet, whether this is seasonal or all year around. Your vet will work with you as to what day/time would suit in order to effectively manage your herd/flock.

If you are a prospective new client that will need routine fertility visits, please call the Sherborne practice to discuss this with a Clinical Director.

TB Testing

All our farm vets can TB test, these can be booked in on either a Monday, Tuesday or Friday depending on availability.

TB paperwork is processed at our Sherborne branch and sent on to APHA.

If you have any queries regarding your TB test, please call the main office. If you have any queries regarding movement of testing windows, restrictions or changes to CPH please call APHA 03000 200 301.

Abortion and Sudden Death Enquiries

We can complete abortion and sudden death sampling when authorised by APHA.

If you have a sudden death (no evidence of prior illness) or abortion/premature calving it is advisable that you leave the carcass/foetus and/or isolate the cow where possible and call the main office.

From here you may need to call APHA 03000 200 301 to see whether they determine sampling as necessary.

Mastisis

Low cell counts are vital for maximum milk payments and cell counts are usually linked to mastitis.

We provide mastitis advisory visits to identify farm problems and advise on control.

Nutritional Monitoring

To ensure cows perform to their potential on the diet being provided, and to ensure the levels of feeding are correct, we blood sample the cows to ask them what they think of their diet.

Tests can be either quick and simple or we can perform complete metabolic profiles sampling cows at different stages of their lactation.

Lameness Investigation and Foot Scoring

Our vets can discuss lameness in the herd and best practice in avoiding lameness and foot maintenance.

Gemma Loader is qualified to foot score herds and flocks.

Foot scoring can be booked Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday depending on availability.

Organic Farming

Our vets have a good knowledge of organic farming and can help with ways to best manage your herd keeping within organic guidelines.

Vets can meet you on farm to go through your individual needs and requirements and set up reviews or fertility visits if needed to ensure everything is up to date with the latest organic farming practices.

Laboratory

We have in house laboratory facilities that can be used for a variety of initial sample testing.

We also have the ability to send samples to the lab facilities at Axiom in Exeter for further or specific testing.

Health Schemes

Our vets can assist with all your health scheme needs.

We can carry out work both on farm and “classroom” parts of the course in our Sherborne practice to meet the needs of your selected scheme/s.
